Before seeing John for treatment, you will need a referral from your doctor or other health professional. Bring the referral to your first appointment. Read ‘About your appointment‘ for information about what else to bring. If you have received a registration form in the mail, please fill that in and bring it with you.


You will be charged a fee for your initial consultation, and a lower fee for subsequent consultations, as they are usually shorter and less detailed than your first consultation. A portion of these fees is covered by Medicare. We can process the Medicare rebate in the rooms for you.

There may be some out-of-pocket expenses for patients undergoing surgery. You will be provided with an estimate of fees, including out-of-pocket expenses, if you require surgery. Private health funds offer different kinds of cover and payments and we recommend you check with your health insurance provider about the extent of your cover

Consultation and surgery fees for WorkCover and TAC patients are paid for by the relevant insurance company once the claim is accepted. If you require surgery under WorkCover or TAC there may be delays while they process your application.

Public patients seen at Royal Melbourne Hospital will not be out-of-pocket for consultations or treatment. RMH public patients are seen at the hospital clinic and surgery is subject to a waiting list. Waiting times are typically around 24 months, although this varies according to the clinical urgency. Priority is given to patients with urgent conditions such as traumatic spine fractures.

We accept payment by cash, cheque, EFTPOS, Mastercard, Visa and American Express.
